Numbers
(24 Nov 2007)

After a two week, $50 advertising blitz that exposed my comic to about 4,000 new people, I seem to have about 100 loyal and regular online readers left over. That's in addition to the couple hundred local readers, and the 10,000 people in Whatcom County exposed to my printed comic every week.

It's a strange property of the internet that makes those numbers (even the 10,000 one) seem small.

It's important to remember, even after seven years of cartooning, that's a lot of people. It's a lot of people to be reaching on a daily basis. It's not quite enough to generate any sort of a cash flow, but that's not the first reason for me doing my comic! My first reason is to make someone laugh.

I see my business strategy working as follows:

1. Keep improving the printed comic, and keep offering better and better daily comics online. Drop to three days a week if necessary to keep the quality up.

2. Improve local advertising, with as little expenditure as possible. Maybe create a better "Check out my website for more comics" tag for the printed version.

3. Hold regular art shows, with books for sale and postcards with the website printed prominently on them.

4. Get a couple T-shirts out there, so people can wear them proudly.

5. Print books every three months (now that I have the volume of comics to do so).

6. Use the online advertising to ramp up new online events and raise awareness of developments in the website design and book releases.

My advertising budget cannot exceed what I earn from the comic printed in the Indy, as that is my current cash flow. This comes to approximately $94 a month. Some of that money needs to go to printing and framing the art shows, and printing T-shirts and books.

Every three months, I can spend $280 on prints and advertising. That probably leaves room for 24 shirts of one design a year right now. Enough to start.

7. Whatever it is I'm doing with my comic, the cardinal rule is HAVE FUN.
